When it comes to coming up with mobile device displays with 3D Touch technology – most recently seen in the iPhone 6s – that delivers a more realistic sense of touch, it is a given fact that Apple is still in the lead. Android smartphones, however, are not too far behind and are already trying to close the gap. With the release of the Google Nexus smartphone this 2016, this particular tactile technology is expected to become more of a common feature among Android devices.
According to several reports, HTC, which will manufacture the next iteration of the next Nexus smartphone, will use a 3D Touch-like pressure sensitive display technology on the upcoming Google Nexus smartphone. In addition to that, Google is also rumored to be looking at the possibility of making this feature a standard among Android devices.
Additionally, these reports mentioned that Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Meizu, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo are already in the process of developing handsets using this technology. In fact, Gionee has already unveiled its Elife S9 handset which comes with this 3D Touch feature.
The increase in the use of this technology among Android smartphones has been hampered by the lack of support from app developers. But with Google taking an interest on the technology, app developers are expected to integrate support for this feature, thereby making it more popular among Android handsets.
With 3D Touch, users are able to interact more intuitively with their handsets using a pressure-sensitive display. This display imitates the response and feel of real buttons. Not only that, this force-sensitive technology also promises new or better applications such as virtual reality and more life-like games along with adding sound, texture, and temperature to the displays of our smartphones.
