Utilizzando un sensore CMOS in formato DX da 24,2 MP e un processore di immagini EXPEED 4, la D3500 offre una gamma di sensibilità nativa da ISO 100-25600 per adattarsi al lavoro in una varietà di condizioni di illuminazione, e la combinazione di sensore e processore fornisce anche uno scatto continuo a 5 fps velocità e registrazione video Full HD 1080p a 60 fps. Il design del sensore omette anche un filtro passa-basso ottico per ottenere una maggiore nitidezza e risoluzione da foto e video.
